Geospatial Planning & Mapping

What is GIS?

A geographic information system is a system that creates, manages, analyzes, and maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better management and decision making. -From ESRI Website

With this technology we can identify problems, manage and respond to events, set priorities, monitor change, forecast and understand trends. For the forester, this could translate to identifying insect and disease outbreaks, managing and responding to wildfire, setting priorities for key wildlife species, monitoring change in recreational patterns, forecasting timber value and understanding seasonal weather patterns.

We utilize technology from leading geospatial programs like ESRI ArcGIS Pro, OnX Maps, Avenza Pro and Google Earth Pro. Contact us to assist with your mapping and geospatial needs.

Geospatial Resource Inventory

SBF Utilizes Cutting Edge Geospatial Software

The company Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) is the worldwide leader in geospatial technology. They describe Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology as “the science of where”. When it comes to natural resource management, the skilled forester should always be actively considering “the science of where”.

SBF Offers

  • Geospatial Planning

When taking on a  landscape scale forestry project, one of the first steps a forester should take to guide management is to quantify and stratify forest stands by characteristics to compare statistics such as age, species richness and diversity, usage, productivity, mortality, fire occurrence, protection, etc. This information is then used to set thresholds that guide management. SBF utilizes modern GIS technology throughout this process.

  • Custom Map Drafting

Drafting a map is as much a form of art as it is a science. A map must be useful and easy to read by the interpreter. It must articulate the information it is meant to convey without being busy or confusing. It must portray accurate information at a usable scale. Let SBF assist in your custom map drafting needs.

  • Home Site Planning & Development Consultation

Are you new to the area and considering building a home on your parcel? Are you a developer looking to maximize profits by considering forest value and risk when considering parcel and commonspace arrangement? SBF is available to help our clients with site planning efforts through geospatial planning services.

  • Forest Stand, Treatment & Project Delineation

SBF is happy to assist with geospatial forest project layout and project boundary delineation. We also offer technical services that  “ground truth” or “georeference” project boundaries for accuracy.

  • Geospatial Resource Inventory

Questions like “where”, “why” and “how much of” are common throughout natural resource disciplines and management scenarios. Geospatial resource inventory can provide insight into maintenance  and management of improvements or resources of value. For instance, our clients may need to know how many trees to cut or retain, where there is access by log truck to a particular area, how much of our fencing system is no longer wildlife friendly or in need of repair, which trees are in need of pruning and where are they located? SBF is equipped to answer the questions of where, why and how much of- through cutting edge geospatial resource inventory services.

  • Recreational Planning

At SBF, we can assist our clients with multiple use recreational management considerations that specifically address recreational planning through our geospatial services. For instance, we can help identify and map past, present and future road and trail systems for multiple use travel. Other examples include custom hunting map drafting to common space usage considerations for HOAs or developers.

Urban & Community Forestry Services

Many studies have been done quantifying financial benefits of trees to business and residential areas. Residential properties with trees generally command higher appraisal values than similar properties without trees. Trees provide direct and indirect benefits in urban areas. These benefits include environmental improvements, aesthetic enhancements, economic savings and social health and well being benefits.

Planting and maintaining trees can also come with costs and challenges, especially in urban areas. These costs should be taken into consideration when considering net benefits. When trees are not maintained or cared for, they can become liabilities.

SBF offers a wide range of services for the improvement of public spaces and corridors in urban areas. We may also offer assistance or work beside developers, builders or excavation contractors.

Protect Your Urban Trees

SBF Offers:

  • Urban Forest Planning

Urban forestry is defined as the management of naturally occurring and planted trees and associated plants in urban areas. Arboriculture is the practice and study of the care of trees and other woody plants in landscape environments. To contrast the two, arboriculture focuses on the single tree, the urban forester focuses on the forest or larger population of trees in urban areas. Work for both the urban forester as well as the arborist may be on public or private land managing trees along streets, parks, greenspaces, utility corridors, as well as commercial and residential areas. They may work beside excavation contractors, builders, urban planners, civil engineers, public works officials, government agencies, tree boards and utility providers. At SBF, forester Austin Shelby is certified by the International Society of Arboriculture as a certified arborist. We will also work with other professional Certified Arborists contractors that specialize in technical work such as tree pruning and removal.

  • Hazard Tree Assessments

    *Coming Soon

  • Sick Tree Consultation

Diagnosing tree disorders can be tricky! If you contact us for sick tree consultation we will likely ask questions like- what species is the host tree, are there signs of pests, what are the symptoms of the host tree damage, has the water or shade regime changed, has there been construction or compaction to the root zone, have herbicides been applied in the area, is the site conducive to waste water or mag chloride runoff, is there visible damage to the tree or was there a dramatic climatic event? If the issue is still in question, forward pictures of the host tree and possible pest to SBF for FREE consultation. If we are still stumped, no pun intended, we will visit your site for a nominal fee.

  • Urban Tree Inventory

A tree inventory is a record of the location, characteristics, and assessment of individual trees and tree stands over a well defined area such as a park or open space. Managers use this information to perform statistical analysis that sets thresholds to guide management. SBF will use GPS technology to accurately locate trees . We will use GIS and geospatial technology to create digital or hard copy maps. This information can be used to support budgets that support arboriculture.

  • Tree Appraisal

There are several approaches to urban tree appraisal. The demand for the client will likely guide which approach is taken. The first is based on real estate value in which comparable properties, with and without trees, are analyzed. This method has limitations in setting parameters of the magnitude of difference by geography. The second is called i-Tree and was developed by researchers and the USDA Forest Service. It considers attributes such as location, characteristics, proximity to structures, etc. Yet another way is to utilize methodology set forth by the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers through the Guide for Plant Appraisal, 10th Edition. This provides the most complex methods and can account for several factors such as actual replacement cost.

  • Tree Spraying

Let SBF help you protect your trees from bark beetles and other insects and diseases. We can apply preventative sprays to reduce your risk of tree loss.  Contact us in the winter for a consultation so that we can make applications prior to beetle flight.

  • Tree Pruning & Removal Consultation

Pruning objectives may include reducing the risk of failure, providing clearance, increasing light, maintaining tree health, influencing flower or fruit production, increasing views and improving tree aesthetics. In certain cases such as public safety or landowner objectives, trees are best removed and/or replaced. Types of pruning methods include crown cleaning, utility pruning, crown thinning, vista pruning, crown reduction and restoration. Let our staff consult with you about which pruning or removal method is right for your trees. SBF holds a close working relationship with other local Certified Arborists that specialize in a plethora of technical services like pruning and tree removal.

  • Tree Species Selection Consultation

The importance of matching a tree and its requirements to the planting site is crutial. Our staff will consider additional site factors like soils, planting technique, incorporation of buildings and other infrastructure, water availability, other trees and shrubs and future maintenance.  Tree characteristics are also considered during tree species selection. These include tree quality, genetics, hardiness, growth form, size, showy flower and fruit production, fall color, and insect and disease tolerance.

  • Tree Protection Planning

Construction damage is one of the most common causes of tree death and decline in urban settings. When a future development site has trees, they should be incorporated into the planning process by protecting them. Are you building or about to build a home? Are you a developer looking to maximize profits by accounting for forest value when considering parcel and commonspace arrangement? Let us help you protect your trees before, during and after construction.

Wildfire Mitigation & Planning Services

Due to Colorado’s arid climate, topagraphy and fire-dependent forests, many homeowners and landowners are particularly vulnerable to wildfires. It is important to keep this in mind when buying, building and/or maintaining your home or property. Homeowners can take steps to protect their property and help alleviate the spread of wildland fires.

  • Shaded Fuel Break

  • Aerial View of Landscape Scale Fuels Treatment

  • Reduce Ladder Fuels in Your Forest

  • Defensible Space Surrounding Home

Three factors have emerged as the primary determinants of a home’s ability to survive a wildfire:

  1. Defensible space around the home
  2. The home’s structural ignitability
  3. The strategic placement of fuelbreaks

Together, two of these factors create a concept called the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ), which includes the structure and the space immediately surrounding the structure. To protect a home from wildfire, the primary goal should be to reduce or eliminate fuels and ignition sources within the HIZ and to reduce the home’s structural ignitability by choosing noncombustible construction materials.

In addition to mitigating fuels in the HIZ, shaded fuel breaks can provide added protection to a home or property. When strategically placed on the landscape, a shaded fuel break is designed to slow a running crown fire by changing the vertical and horizontal continuity of fuels so that fire behavior lessens, dropping the fire from the crown of the trees to the forest floor. These breaks are described as “shaded” because they do not require that all trees be removed from the fuel break.

SBF Offers:

  • Mitigation Project Planning & Administration

SBF offers expert consulting and technical services for all aspects of wildfire project planning and administration. This includes design, layout and project administration from idea to completion.

  • Defensible Space Assessments

Let our staff show you how to manipulate the vegetation around your home to slow or stop wildfire while protecting first responders.

  • Home Hardening Consultation

Research has shown that a large number of homes lost in wildfire events is due to ember intrusion, rather than an approaching flame front. SBF offers consulting on how to mitigate the risk of home ignition by building, replacing or repairing your home or parts of your home with noncombustible materials.

  • Ingress Egress Consultation

The ability of you or first responders to find and safely access your property during a wildfire or other emergency event is incredibly important. SBF can help through consulting services that address secondary ingress/egress routes, improving upon existing ingress/egress routes, driveway width for fire trucks as well as signage for your home address.

  • Gambel Oak Control

Controlling Gambel oak on certain forest sites can be a challenge due to its aggressive growth. Once oak is set back mechanically, it can be further controlled by the application of herbicides. Preventing regrowth of woody material around residual trees and structures will improve and maintain the effectiveness of a wildfire mitigation treatment by suppressing ladder fuels.

  • Broadcast Seeding

SBF offers post project ATV seeding. Seeding after forest treatments has the potential to maximize wildlife habitat, create competition for noxious and invasive weeds, protect water resources by minimizing erosion and create an aesthetically pleasing and productive forest.

“A few years back, we asked Austin to assess the fire mitigation needs of our home on our 50 acres in Pleasant Valley. Austin carefully explained the process and organized the mitigation effort which encompassed 16 acres around our home. We were left with park-like surroundings which included safely spacing our finest trees to slow wildfire. Austin then dispersed native grass and wildflower seed with great success. We can now view wildlife from our house. We have remained friends with Austin to this day.”

SBF Offers:

  • Insect & Disease Identification

Properly identifying the host tree is one of the first steps in determining which insect or disease could be damaging a tree. At SBF, we know our trees and can help you identify the host and pest as well as provide management recommendations accordingly.

  • Insect & Disease Survey

If you are seeing dead or dying trees on your property, SBF can assist in identifying the pest or disorder, determining the population level or severity, what life stage is the pest particularly vulnerable to control and the potential for management action or inaction. Knowing where endemic pest populations are active can lead to swift management action when populations reach epidemic levels.

  • General Sick Tree Consultation

Diagnosing tree disorders can be tricky! If you contact us for sick tree consultation we will likely ask questions like- what species is the host tree, are there signs of pests, what are the symptoms of the host tree damage, has the water or shade regime changed, has there been construction or compaction to the root zone, is the site conducive to waste water or mag chloride runoff, is there visible damage to the tree or was there a dramatic climatic event? • Beetle Pheromone/Semiochemical Consultation and Placement

Both aggregate and anti-aggregate beetle pheromone treatments have proven to be effective. Beetle pheromone placement should NOT replace active management through removal of the host trees when the pest is most vulnerable. If sanitation has occurred, we commonly use the anti-aggregate beetle pheromones MCH and Verbanone to control Douglas fir beetle and mountain pine beetle, respectively. SBF provides expert consultation on the use of semiochemicals as well as technical services involved in placement.

  • Gambel Oak & Other Woody Plant Control

Controlling Gambel oak on certain forest sites can be a challenge due to its aggressive growth. Once oak is set back mechanically, it can be further controlled by the application of herbicides.

  • Invasive & Noxious Plant Surveys

The first step in making a plan for invasive and noxious plants is to determine what species of weeds are present, where they are present, what types of weeds are present (annual, biennial, perennial), and what is the source of the infestation. From here, SBF can assist in further planning.

  • Broadcast Seeding

Quick establishment of native grasses can deter noxious and invasive weed establishment. SBF offers ATV broadcast seeding and spiked harrowing services.

“My property had dense vegetation and was very overgrown. It also had noxious weeds like Canada and Russian thistle. Austin visited my site and came up with a plan to thin our juniper, pinyon, oak and Douglas fir to a spacing that would slow fire spread. After the project he spread native grasses and flowers to compete with noxious weeds. After 2 years, the health of the forest has much improved. I see more deer elk and turkey. I have seen more deer fawns since the work was completed. Austin brings knowledge, experience and care for the environment. I have maintained contact with him for the latest forestry information.”

Forest Resource Services

When sustainably managed, forests provide countless renewable resources.

What is a tree worth you may ask? A single tree, whether cut or standing, certainly holds a value. Left standing, a tree could add value with growth, provide critical wildlife habitat or provide a value as simple as shade. Its value if cut could depend upon various market factors. Could this tree end up at a local sawmill for dimensional lumber or could it find its way to a custom bar top woodworker? At SBF, we can help you understand the true value of your forest.

Our company offers several styles of comprehensive forest management plans, each custom tailored to fit our client’s needs. We also prepare timber sale contracts, statements of work and requests for proposals to solicit to local forestry contractors, loggers and wood product processors.

When planning moves to operations, SBF specializes in full technical timber sale design, layout, resource sampling and administration.

Post project treatments such as tree planting, native grass seeding and noxious weed control make good projects great. SBF is well qualified and happy to assist with these post-project practices.
